Colombia captures 22 ELN rebels after ceasefire expires

Colombian Defense Minister Luis Carlos Villegas on Monday said security forces have captured 22 members of the National Liberation Army guerrilla group since a bilateral ceasefire expired at midnight last Tuesday. Hostilities between the government and rebels resumed immediately after the ceasefire ended, despite ongoing peace talks being held in Quito, Ecuador, to put an end to the five decades of fighting.

The Security Council on Wednesday welcomed the progress in the peace process with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia , and voiced dismay over peace prospects with regard to the smaller leftist rebel group of the National Liberation Army . "The members of the Security Council welcomed the leadership and continued commitment of the parties and the positive developments over the past three months, including the transformation of FARC from an armed group into a political party, and urged continued momentum toward full implementation of the peace agreement, including the full political, legal and socioeconomic reincorporation of FARC ," said the statement.

Julian Assange was granted political asylum in 2012
